Being unemployed can be one of the toughest times of your life, both financially and emotionally.  Whether the loss of your job was a sudden surprise or something you knew was coming, there are things you can do to make being unemployed a little easier.  If being unemployed seems too daunting, start with these 9 survival tips:

  1. 1.  File for unemployment benefits as soon as you lose your job.

Some unemployed workers are embarrassed to file for unemployment, but it is something that needs to be done right away.  It can take a few weeks for your first check to arrive, and you’ll need the money as soon as possible.

  1. 2.  Tap into all of your friends and business contacts.

Being unemployed means that you can never stop networking.  Friends or old co-workers may be able to help get you a job.  Or, they may be able to introduce you to someone who can get you a new job.

  1. 3.  Keep your emotions in check.

It is normal for unemployed workers to feel sad or angry, but do not let those emotions consume you.  Instead, remember that being unemployed is only temporary.  Focus on moving ahead with an effective job search.

  1. 4.  Make an effective job search your full-time job.

Not only will it help you move forward, but it will also keep you busy while your family and friends head off to work.  Do not succumb to daytime television or sitting around in your pajamas; it will only make being unemployed worse.

  1. 5.  Tailor each cover letter to the job you’re applying for.

Being unemployed means you have plenty of time to get each cover letter perfect.  Use your time to highlight your strengths and let potential employers know how hiring you will benefit them.

  1. 6.  Reevaluate your priorities.

Unemployed workers may have some thinking to do before moving ahead.  What expenses can you cut?  Do you need to find a new industry to work in?  They’re tough questions, but ones that need to be answered.

  1. 7.  Learn something new whenever you can.

There are plenty of free, or nearly-free, ways to expand your skills.  Be on the lookout for free seminars or cheap classes.  The added knowledge may help you land a new job.

  1. 8.  Remember that it is ok to have fun.

Being unemployed doesn’t mean you have to give up your social life.  Sure, unemployed workers may have to find cheaper forms of entertainment, but don’t abandon your friends.  If you’ve worked hard all day on your effective job search, it is ok to go out for a cheap meal or a movie.

  1. 9.  Be nice to everyone.

Being unemployed is tough, but it doesn’t give you the right to be rude.  You never know who you will meet and if they can help you.  Do not bad-mouth your old boss because you never know who will hear it.  Remember, it is a small world after all.
